The Mayor of Mogadishu, His Excellency Abdirahman Omar Osman along with German Ambassador, Her Excellency Jutta Gisela Frasch launched the Somali Urban Resilience and Recovery Project (SURRP) at Mogadishu City Hall (Ufficio Governo).

SURRP involves the construction of community roads in Mogadishu. The project is funded by the Government of Germany through the Somali Multi-Partner Fund managed by the World Bank.

SURRP will create an opportunity for youth employment and lead to overall economic growth for the city of Mogadishu in line with the mayor’s priorities and vision. These community roads will improve access to social amenities and connectivity between neighbourhoods.

The event was attended by Honourable Ministers from the Federal Government of Somalia including:

The event was also attended by the BRA Deputy Mayors and Secretary General, community leaders, and representatives from international development agencies.

With the help of the World Bank, the Municipality of Mogadishu has successfully implemented the preparatory activities for SURRP under the Somali Investment Planning Project (SUIPP). During the SUIPP, feasibility studies were completed for community roads in all 17 districts of Mogadishu.

The project will begin with the construction of 19 community roads in Hamarweyne, Shingani, Abdiaziz, Hamarjabjab, Hawlwadhaag, Boondheere, and Warta Nabada districts.

The roads will be constructed using interlock instead of other pavement types and will create more employment opportunities for women, youth, IDP’s and urban poor.

The Municipality of Mogadishu will be closely working with the Federal Government and its development partners to ensure the success of SURRP.
